Why we exist

Merino wool base layers are one of the best investments an outdoor enthusiast can make — but the category is crowded, confusing, and full of marketing claims. Fabric weights, micron counts, blends, and fits all matter, and the differences between a great layer and a mediocre one are real.

We started Merinon to cut through the noise. We buy and field-test base layers across real conditions — high-output ascents, frigid belays, multi-day trips without laundry — and we score every one across six criteria so you can weigh them for your own needs.

How we score

Every review is rated on a 0–10 scale across the factors that actually determine whether a base layer performs:

  • Warmth — insulation relative to fabric weight and knit structure.
  • Comfort — next-to-skin feel, seams, and fit.
  • Durability — resistance to pilling, stretching, and seam wear over time.
  • Breathability — moisture management during high output.
  • Odor resistance — how many days you can wear it before it needs a wash.
  • Value — performance relative to price.

The overall score reflects the complete picture, not a simple average — context matters, and we weight criteria by how much they affect real-world use.

Our independence

We are reader-supported. Some links on our site are affiliate links, which means we may earn a commission if you buy through them — at no extra cost to you. This never influences our scores or which products we recommend. We test the good and the bad, and we say so plainly.
